A few alternatives

I passed about 30 of these signs the other day....
The other day I was on my way home from work when I passed a sign just like this one.  Then I passed about 30 more.  These signs lined a road that led to an elementary school that many students walk to on a daily basis.  I'm not opposed to the occasional reminder that encourages safer driving, but these signs seemed a bit over the top to me.  Particularly a whole street lined with them.

So I thought up a few alternatives that could be printed on signs and placed on roads.  All are statements that I feel are more inclusive.  Here are a few:

  • Drive safe!
  • Watch out for pedestrians!
  • Slow down!
  • Pay attention!
  • Yield to pedestrians!
  • Safety first!
  • Don't drive like an asshole!
Feel free to add a more suggestions in the comments!

  1. I like your suggestions, especially the last one.

    Here's a couple from me:

Drive like your elderly parents/people you love live here.
Drive considerately. (This terminology is used in Thailand, and I've always liked it).

  2. A whole street lined with those signs ... someone really wants that message to sink in.

I love your suggestions. The last one is a favourite especially recently on the roads here.

The only suggestion I can contribute:

    Drive first, phone later.

It's actually illegal to talk on the phone whilst driving unless you have a handsfree here but people do it all the time or actually text on the phone while driving which is dangerous. It just takes a split second for things to go very wrong.

    1. Drive first, phone later is a good one too!

The city I live in has been ranked in the top 10 for cities with the worst drivers for years so I am very accustomed to idiots on the road. I can't even believe how many people I see texting on a daily basis!

  3. This reminds me of something I saw recently on Facebook. You know those "Baby on Board" signs? This one said "Adults on Board" and then in smaller type underneath "We want to live too." Cracked me up. ;)
