New look

Over the weekend I decided that I needed some change in my life.  That I needed to do something on impulse and just for fun.  So I cut off my hair.  Like six inches of it.  And colored it.  It's fun and I really like it, though I was hoping that the color would turn out a bit more red.

It's been a long time since I've taken the plunge and done something like this.  I need to get back in the habit of doing things like this.  For fun.  Just because I want to.

Is anyone else impulsive with their hair or has ever made a drastic change to it?  Or is it just me?

  1. Wow!! Sounds great.

I slowly grew my hair out, and kept it longish (shoulder length) for about six years. Then just before we went to Italy two years ago, I cut it off, till it was short, almost a pixie cut.I'd had it like that before, so it wasn't that shocking! Well, not to me. But it was to some people who knew me! I think sometimes, taking the plunge and trying something new and fun is great for our spirits. Good for you!

  2. Before and after shot???
Hey, if it’s not red enough this time there’s always next time. It might take a few goes to find the colour you want.

I’ve been trying to grow mine longer for the past few years. At the moment it’s about 1/4 the way down my back. I’ve been colouring the grey for ages so I guess it’s the last hurrah of youth to have the colour and the length before I decide enough is enough and I give in to the thinning and the brittleness and the dryness (thanks hormones) and chop it back.

The hubby’s cousin is a hairdresser and if we visit (they’re in Melb) she usually does my hair. I’ve had it coloured multi shades of brown/lightbrown/blonde a few times. It is fun. Makes you feel good about yourself!

    1. LOL...I try to keep the blog at least semi-anonymous so no pictures of me on the blog. I'd be happy to oblige if you shoot me an email though. :)

I usually hit just below the shoulders before I start to get antsy and want to do something different. This time it was just at my shoulders. Gray hairs were actually the catalyst for this change. I'd been wanting to do something then I saw how grey I'm getting. Ugh. This is the first time I've had my hair short (chin length) since the whole peri-menopause crap started and I'm really noticing the difference in texture. But having a new look does make me feel good about myself.

  3. I do that every few years. I figure since it grows back, I can change it up. If I don't like it, it is only temporary.

In fact, I've been contemplating a change for a few months now, but I can't make up my mind. I think that's because I'm thinking of growing it back out and that is so much more work than cutting it off.

    1. Growing it out is sooooooo much more work! I can't wait to hear if you end up doing something drastic!

  4. Also, I've heard vinegar helps set in color. When I shower, I usually wet my hair, and then pour some vinegar on. I let it set for a minute. Than I rinse it out and shampoo as normal. I can't even remember where I heard about this, but I think it helps. I usually do it during the first 2 weeks after I color my hair. But then I stop until my next appointment.

  5. Eighteen months ago I had an out-of-body experience at the hairdresser and found myself asking her to cut my hair from waist-length to just above the shoulder. It took me ages to stop doing a double-take at a mirror!

    1. That's awesome! I find that once it gets down to a little below my shoulders I start to get annoyed. A few years ago it was down to the middle of my back, but that took too much effort.

  6. I had my hair around shoulder length or just past for eons, through jr high, high school & university. Then I went to grad school in southern Ontario. I'd never experienced humidity like that before, and the house I was living in had NO a/c! One of the girls in my class had this very cute short cut, so I asked her where she had it done and made myself an appointment. I've been wearing it short ever since then (30+ years). :) I've never really regretted it -- it's not quite as versatile as long hair, but much cooler (especially since I have very thick, heavy hair) & easier to handle!

I remember one of my girlfriends cutting her hair short & perming it after her boyfriend dumped her. She showed up for a girls' weekend with me after doing this (we were both in university) and we laughed & laughed about it.
