Odds & Ends

  • I finished reading Avalanche by Julia Leigh and I'll post about it on September 21st, as part of the book blog tour that Pamela is hosting.  The author has signed on to answer any questions that we may have about the book.  As you'll see on Pamela's post, quite a few bloggers have signed on to do it.
  • My entire family (parents, siblings, their spouses offspring) is having family photos done on October 8th.  I'm approaching these pictures with the same excitement that one typically reserves for dental work or trips to the DMV.  In some respects these pictures have been two years in the making, but people kept getting pregnant so they were delayed so everybody could be in them.  While I sort of feel like these pictures will be an exercise in "pick which couple is different," I am actually looking forward to having some nice pictures of hubs and me.  I'm also taking our dog to be in the pictures because I figure that if I have to drive 150 miles for stupid pictures that I don't particularly want to be in, that I'm taking my dog to be in them too.  And he's wearing a bow tie.
  • I got a form letter from my gynecologist's office telling me that all of my blood work came back "normal."  I understand that this is common practice and that most people don't care about the actual numbers, but, as someone with an honorary degree in reproductive endocrinology courtesy of infertility, I want the actual numbers.  I also wonder how much care was taken in interpreting the results (likely by some member of the office staff as opposed to the actual doctor) since they reported that my thyroid test was normal.  Which is good news until you consider that I didn't have my thyroid tested.
  • I had my pelvic ultrasound on Monday.  My IUD is in the correct place, so that's really good news.  Also there were no cysts visualized except for follicular cysts, so that's good too.  The ultrasound didn't reveal any cause of my near constant right ovary area pain (at least per my educated guess-the tech, of course, couldn't provide too much by way of explanation).  The surprising part is that I actually had two pretty good sized follicular cysts.  I didn't go far down the treatment path, but I can tell you that I never had two at the same time, and I never had one as big as the 25mm that I had on Monday.  So I think that my body is trying to pull a rabbit out of a hat or something, and I'm not sure how I feel about it.
  • I go back to the doctor on Tuesday.  I'm not nervous like I was for the initial visit, but I am wondering what the next course of action is going to be.
  • I am so unbelievably sick of politics.  I'm not one to wish away time, but I literally can't wait until the second Wednesday of November, because that will mean that all of the campaigning is over (at least for 18 months or so, in theory).  I am uneasy about how this is all going to end.
  • Today I feel very fortunate to have the flexibility to work at home sometimes.  I'm currently working from the comfort of my deck and enjoying this beautiful weather.  I also love that I can take a break and write on my somewhat neglected blog.

  1. That thing about not having your thyroid tested but having a result is upsetting. Best get copies. I recall asking for all my gyn history to bring to the endocrinologist and noticed that the only time I had a positive hpv test, I had had an ultrasound and my uterus had apparently completely flipped to the other side. Then a year later, flipped back. We all agreed these were not my test results in the folder. I had all these ultrasounds because of pain on the left side of my pelvis, also unexplained.

I hope you post some pictures of your dog in a tie, do you think he can sit still for pictures?

    1. Oh I'll definitely get copies of all results! Did they ever find the cause of your pain and was it ever resolved?

  4. I'm so happy you're taking your dog to the family photos. We had some done at the insistence of my parents in law a few years back and the only nice ones of me and my husband were the ones with Molly (my previous dog) in them. It gave us both something to focus on and to look genuinely happy about. Without her, we had those awful fake, stiff smiles and body postures. By the way, Molly didn't keep still, but that didn't matter (the equipment is good enough that she wasn't blurred).

  5. Oh, how frustrating about your bloodwork. Shifty shifty magical thyroid test results... I love that your dog will be in the photos and that he'll be wearing a bow tie. A couple of years ago our Christmas card featured our cats. In bowties. Because, they were fancy for the occasion--so I'm a fan! I really don't know how to teach around this election this year... I'm sorry about the weird 2-follicle-25mm scan, I wouldn't know how to feel about that, either. And I can't wait to read your post on Avalanche! It's on my kindle list to read, so I'd better do that this weekend so I don't have spoilers. It sounded very good.

    1. I think we're kindred spirits! I think that our dog has been featured on our holiday cards for at least the past four years. I always have a fun time picking out the picture and card design. I can't even imagine teaching about the election. Makes me not miss teaching high school at all. :)

  6. What a great idea to take your doggie for the family photo session! Your family will love to have him on the portrait! My family is far away :( but my husband and I actually hired a photographer to have a nice portrait with our dog. We framed it, and also sent out copies to our family. Later I was so surprised to see that almost everyone who we sent the picture to ended up putting it on there wall or on a shelf. The power of good looking dogs :)

It's a pity you were not able to see the actual #s of your tests. My doctors all have portals where all the tests get downloaded, and where a doctor personally writes her interpretation and advice (new Rx, supplement etc) so I can start treatment without go to the office for the results. If you use Quest or Labcorp you can get the results directly from them, otherwise you'll have to ask the dr for the copy. Frustrating about the thyroid, makes you doubt their interpretation of other bloodwork...

Working at home is really cool! I work from home 100% now and I really love it. Surprisingly, my social life is more busy now that I work at home than when I had to go to the office every day, and OMG I don't miss the commute (DC metro traffic is brutal).

    1. That is so sweet! Sometimes we definitely underestimate people. Plus our dogs are fabulous!

I signed up for the Quest website so I'll get the numbers that way (unfortunately it takes 24 hours to populate). It didn't occur to sign up for it before because all of my other results are sent directly to the online healthcare portal for my insurance network/providers. This doc doesn't participate in the online portal thing (I'm still trying to figure out my EPO insurance network...)

I could do without my commute (though certainly not DC metro traffic), but I honestly need the structure of going in to the office a couple of days per week. I'm pretty sure I'd never leave my house if I worked from home full time. LOL!

  8. I'm not sure I'm too keen to have the election over - it's too scary. And that's from someone on the other side of the world!! (Scared AND powerless - that's the rest of the world.)

We have a new system here that we can access online all our blood test results, so it's pretty clear if they're ours or not, and we get the exact numbers. I always ask for the details these days - like you, after infertility I know how important details are.

Ugh. Photos. Double ugh. Family photos. (I remember being completely annoyed and miserable years ago when I was ordered - by my sister-in-law - to appear for a family photo shoot.)

    1. I definitely see your point about the election and with as much as I want the campaigning to be over, I'm also in the same camp as you. This election is far closer than I ever anticipated it would be and I am so ashamed for my country that a man like Donald Trump is a candidate for president and actually has a chance of winning. I told a colleague originally from the Caribbean about your analogy (if the US sneezes the rest of the world gets a cold) and she completely agreed!

I love online health portals and the availability to look up test results, schedule appointments, pay bills, etc all from a single portal. I'm not sure why this doc doesn't participate. I suspect it's because there are three major insurers in my city and they are all engaged in an epic pissing contest and doctors typically only accept one of the three. My doctor is a unicorn of sorts, because she accepts all insurance. Since the portals are often through the insurer I think that's why my results aren't uploaded automatically.

Ordered to appear for photos is a great way to describe it. It was the same scenario for us. We were also told what color to wear, which I promptly axed because this pasty white girl isn't going to wear cream in a photo. I also put my foot down and insisted that photos be on the farm since my family (me excluded) has a well established history of not being on time for anything...I figured if the pictures took place where 3/5 of the families lived that they could maybe be on time.

  9. What Mali said about the election. :p I am sick of it too & I'm not even American, lol. But we get CNN & all the American networks, and as our present PM's father once famously said, living next to the States is like sleeping with an elephant -- you feel every twitch, lol. It will affect us too, even if we don't get a say in the outcome.

I am sure the photo shoot will wind up being fun, especially if you bring your dog. ;) I am hoping to get a couple of good photos from this upcoming family wedding that I can use for a photocard for Christmas. I don't do one every year, but this seems like the perfect opportunity...!

    1. I bet you are sick of it, especially since a long campaign in Canada is like six weeks. Related, I love your PM. He seems so charismatic and like he really does have the best interest of your country at heart.

I hope we'll get some good shots. We'll definitely do a photo card featuring the dog because it's fun and people love it. :)
